History:
Raja Horogobindo Banerjee, popularly known as Horo Thakur, succeeded his father Raja Keshab Chandra Banerjee and ruled the region. During his lifetime, Banerjee established several Sanskrit schools as well as a college called "Horogobindo Chatuspathi."Horogobindo Chatuspathi is considered to have been a vibrant hub, having played host to an annual seminar that was nearly-always attended by Acharya Vinobha Vabe. During World War II, Salboni was the site of a Royal Air Force airfield (RAF Salbani).
Geography:
Salboni is located in West Bengal at the coordinates of 22.6°N 87.19°E. It has an average elevation of 25 metres (85 feet). It is on NH 60.
Demographics:
Population: As per 2011 Census of India Salboni had a total population of 3,963, of which 1,973 (50%) were males and 1,990 (50%) were females. Population below 6 years was 371. The total number of literates in Salboni was 3,080 (77.72% of the population over 6 years).
Literacy: As per the 2011 census the total number of literates in Salbani CD Block was 123,974 (74.87% of the population over 6 years) out of which males numbered 69,299 (82.89% of the male population over 6 years) and females numbered 54,675 (66.70% of the female population over 6 years). The gender gap in literacy rates was 16.19%.
Languages and Religion: Bengali is the local language in these areas. There is a Tribal presence in many of the CD Blocks of the district. Santali is spoken by 55.93% of the tribal population of the district. The Bhumij, forming 11.16% of the tribal population, and the Mundas, forming 6.10% of the tribal population, speak Mundari. Other small groups include Koras and Mahalis. The Lodhas, forming 3.85% of the tribal population, the only primitive tribe in the district, speak Lodhi.
In the 2011 census Hindus numbered 168,863 and formed 89.51% of the population in Salboni CD Block. Muslims numbered 6,000 and formed 3.18% of the population. Others numbered 13,790 and formed 7.31% of the population. Others include Addi Bassi, Marang Boro, Santal, Saranath, Sari Dharma, Sarna, Alchchi, Bidin, Sant, Saevdharm, Seran, Saran, Sarin, Kheria,Christians and other religious communities. Christians numbered 654 and formed 0.35% of the population.
